Onella opened its doors in August 2022, right in the heart of Naxxar’s main square — but it was born long before that. The idea started with a simple belief: that wine deserves more than a place on the table; it deserves a space where stories are shared, moments are savoured, and people feel at home. That’s how the concept of Onella — and our guiding philosophy, Wine Stories — came to life.

The name itself comes from g?onnella, the traditional Maltese hooded cloak once worn by women across Malta and Gozo. For us, it reflects a sense of intimacy, elegance, and tradition — the same feeling we want our guests to experience the moment they walk through our door.

We set out to create a true wine bar — warm, relaxed, and welcoming. A place where wine brings people together, whether it’s for a quick glass after work or a long evening with friends. At Onella, wine is at the heart of everything we do.

Our list of over 125 carefully curated bottles is designed to suit every taste and budget. We believe good wine should be accessible — pricing is thoughtful, and we want every guest to feel they’ve made a good choice. We also offer an extensive selection by the glass, using Coravin to preserve freshness and quality with every pour.

At Onella, wine is served with care and attention to detail. Each bottle is poured into RIEDEL grape-specific glassware — your Barolo in a Nebbiolo glass, your Châteauneuf-du-Pape in a Syrah glass, your Sancerre in a Sauvignon Blanc glass. Red wines are decanted in elegant RIEDEL crystal, because we believe every glass should be an experience in itself.

We also host regular wine-themed events to help our guests deepen their appreciation for wine in a fun, informal setting. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just beginning your journey, there’s always something new to discover at Onella.

Our food is made for sharing. The menu changes regularly to highlight the best seasonal ingredients, and is always rooted in comfort and quality. Signature favourites include our pinsa selection and our oven-baked Onella rosette — dishes that have become part of who we are.

Onella lives inside a restored 200-year-old Maltese building. When we took it over, we made it our mission to bring out its original features while adding a touch of colour and warmth. The space is intimate — perfect for couples or small groups — with a character that reflects both the building’s heritage and our personal touch.

We’re a small, family-run team who care deeply about what we do. There’s pride in every plate, every pour, and every smile. We want every guest to feel the love that built this place — and to leave with a memory worth raising a glass to.
